For example, Amtrak’s Southwest Chief passes through the stunning geography between Lamar, La Junta, and Trinidad. Ride or drive. But do make these glorious trips during the fall season.

Daytrip from Lamar

Colorful Autumn Trips - Lamar to Southern ColoradoTraders and settlers followed the Santa Fe trail through the Midwest and to Lamar and into the Big Timbers. Big Timbers or stands of giant cottonwoods extend 45 miles along the Arkansas River. They lent shelter for pioneers and picturesque autumn photoshoots to travelers today.

Seventy years after the Louisiana Purchase, the Santa Fe Railway opened its Lamar train station in 1886. Settlers flocked to Lamar and the Arkansas Valley–a place treasured by the American Indians. This region remains the heart of agricultural color in Southern Colorado.

From Trinidad take the Highway Of Legends

Cuchara and Trinidad are destination mountain villages. You can take in the beauty along the Highways Of Legends as it rolls through the southern Colorado foothills. The scenic byway peaks on the Cuchara Pass at 9,938 feet, with astounding views of the Sangre de Cristos and Spanish Peaks.

Walsenburg to Trinidad Loop

A historic gateway community of Walsenburg sits along Interstate 25. Farther on, the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad rolls through fall colors way beyond the roads. The train stops in Alamosa, Fort Garland, and La Veta.

Those who camp might take the byway south past Bear Lake, Blue Lake campgrounds, and Monument Lake and Trinidad Lake. East of the Cuchara Pass enroute back to I-25, you’ll cross Cordova Pass, which peaks at 11,243 feet, and the town of Aguilar. To get the full tour, take I-25 south to Trinidad and the byway back up to Walsenburg.

Alpine Loop for Your 4 Wheel Drive

Trudged by miners almost 200 years ago, the rugged Alpine Loop climbs Engineer Pass and Cinnamon Pass at 12,000 feet. You’ll need a 4-wheel drive vehicle. The Alpine Look passes ghost towns and mining camps such as Capitol City and Animas Forks.

Far Away and Aside

Lamar, Colorado is antipodal. It’s one of three places with the distinction of being globally opposite another landmass. Lamar lies directly opposite Ile Amsterdam, an island in the southern Indian Ocean, and to the research station at Martin-de-Vivies.

You’ll have to opt for real estate in Lamar or Southern Colorado if you want colorful autumn seasons, though.
